GWS Giants’ first employee Alan McConnell falls victim to cuts

Greater Western Sydney’s first employee, Alan McConnell, is among the coaching casualties due to cuts to football department staff, but former skipper Callan Ward is a genuine chance to make an instant return when the season resumes.

Across town, former Sydney premiership star Tadhg Kennelly, former captain Stuart Maxfield and Swans life member Craig Holden remain stood down as teams ramp up preparations for the restart of the season.

The developments give an insight into the difficult decisions clubs have faced as they deal with the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.

One of the most experienced coaches in the game, McConnell is the club’s director of coaching and was also at the helm of the Giants’ women’s team. The veteran, who was Fitzroy’s last senior coach, joined the league’s newest club in 2009 before they even had a name.
