Tasmania COVID-19 outbreak linked to health workers’ ‘illegal dinner party’

Footage has emerged of Chief Medical Officer Brendan Murphy accusing a group of health workers linked to the COVID-19 outbreak that has closed two Tasmanian hospitals of attending an “illegal dinner party” in breach of social distancing rules.

In the video, Professor Murphy is filmed speaking to a parliamentary committee in New Zealand about Australia’s efforts to flatten the curve of the coronavirus pandemic.

“We thought we were doing really well in the last week and we had a cluster of 49 cases in a hospital in Tasmania just over the weekend, most of them went to an illegal dinner party of medical workers,” he is heard saying in the footage.

Tasmanian premier Peter Gutwein on Monday rejected social media “rumours” about the source of the hospital outbreak, saying authorities were still working to determine the chain of transmission through contact tracing.
