Carlton forced to end Northern Blues alignment due to budget cuts

Carlton have been forced to end their alignment with the Northern Blues after soft-cap cuts were introduced in the wake of the shutdown of the AFL and state league competitions due to the coronavirus.

The decision means the Blues have parted company with the club’s senior coach Josh Fraser and general manager of football Ben Brennan as the full toll of cost-cutting emerges across club.

Carlton are understood to be devastated to make the decision as the alignment had been stronger than it had ever been, with the Northern Blues recruiting strongly over summer adding players of the calibre of Lukas Webb, Jordan Cunico and Cody Hirst to their list.

However with the financial tsunami hitting clubs and the uncertainty around the future of the VFL in its current form, the Blues had no option but to inform the pair of the decision with the infrastructure and personnel costs of the VFL unable to be sustained through the period.
