NRL 2020 season cancelled due to coronavirus fears

The NRL has suspended its season after two rounds after fighting to keep the competition alive during the coronavirus outbreak.

League officials had vowed to continue playing as the COVID-19 crisis deepened but the closing of the Queensland border on Monday has forced their hand.

The NRL held a conference call with club chief executives at 5.45pm, with an announcement expected after 6pm.

The suspension of the competition, which was one of the last in any sport around the world that was still running, follows that of the AFL, which announced on Sunday it was going on hold until May 31.
