Justin Chambers was one of four remaining original cast members on Grey’s Anatomy but now the actor has departed Seattle Grace hospital in a surprising storyline.
Chambers, who has played Dr Alex Karev for all 16 seasons of the hit show, left the show in November saying that he needed to focus on his mental health.
Chambers did not appear in the final episode, which screened this week in the US, but his voice can be heard in final letters his character pens to his wife Jo (Camilla Luddington), Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) and Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson).
In his letters he reveals that he won’t be returning to Seattle Grace hospital and had reunited with his ex-wife, Izzie, played by Katherine Heigl. Heigl won an Emmy Award for her role in Grey’s Anatomy before departing to star in movies. However her film career never quite hit the same levels of success as she had on the small screen.
Alex and Izzie were married before Izzie left Seattle in Season 6, but Alex reveals that when he was calling all of Meredith’s former co-workers for her trial, he reached out to Izzie.
Izzie reveals that she has five-year-old twins, Alex and Eli, with the sperm that Alex provided when Izzie had cancer so she could freeze her embryos.
After discovering he is a father, Alex decides to stay on the farm in Kansas where Izzie is living with their twin boys and working as a surgical oncologist.
“If it was just about two women I love, I’d choose my wife,” Alex tells his wife, Jo. “When I told you I loved you I meant it, but Izzie has our kids.”
In his letter to Meredith, Alex calls her his best friend.
“I will miss the hell out of you, but I’m finally exactly where I should be. I never had that before,” he says.
Now that Chambers has left Grey’s Anatomy there are just three actors who have remained with the show from the start, including Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey), James Pickens Jnr (Richard Webber) and Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey).
