Former senator Nova Peris has said she quit politics rather than compromise her core beliefs as an Aboriginal person.
Ms Peris, who was a Labor senator for the Northern Territory for one term from 2013, also told the ABC’s Q+A about the torrent of racism she faced in the role.
“If not every day, every second day I would be attacked: by racist trolls, mail that was sent, phone calls, you know: ‘get back in your box you black b—-‘, and all the rest of it,” Ms Peris said. “It was horrific.
“I had death threats, the AFP were tracking down mail that was sent to me. If you are an Indigenous person and you challenge the status quo, you are going to be attacked.”
