People-smuggling boat off Australia stopped and turned back

A people-smuggling boat carrying eight people has been intercepted by Australian authorities off the coast of Western Australia and turned back to Indonesia.

It is the 38th people-smuggling turnback since the Coalition launched Operation Sovereign Borders in 2013.

Peter Dutton says the latest turnback is evidence of the need to continue strong boarder protection measures.Credit:Alex Ellinghausen

The eight “potential illegal immigrants” were returned to Indonesia after the small boat was intercepted near Cape Leveque by in mid-January.

All eight people on board, who were Chinese and Indonesian nationals, were returned to Indonesia. It is unclear how many were asylum seekers trying to reach Australia.
