The horror incident happened in Chermside just before 8.30pm last night.
Queensland Police said a white Toyota Corolla was driving in an easterly direction along Rode Road when it ran a red light at the intersection with Gympie Road.
It then collided with a Holden Barina and Mitsubishi Pajero sending the Corolla flying into the air.
Pictures show a scene of carnage with at least five cars involved and the Corolla lying mangled on its roof with both its front and rear ends crushed in the impacts.
The man driving the Corolla died at the scene. TheCourier Mail said he was 32 years old.
A 57-year-old man, who was driving the Mitsubishi Pajero, was also transported to hospital in a critical condition. His car was also badly damaged in the incident.
Occupants of the other vehicles were treated for minor injuries.
