Homesick Essendon Bomber Conor McKenna departs Hangar, flies back to Ireland

Essendon’s plans for the 2020 season have received yet another blow with speedster Conor McKenna returning home to Ireland due to “homesickness and family-related reasons”, according to a club release.

The uncertainty over McKenna’s availability in the immediate future compounds interrupted pre-seasons endured by key Bombers Dyson Heppell (foot), Orazio Fantasia (hip), Joe Daniher (groin), Michael Hurley (shoulder), Cale Hooker (hip), Tom Bellchambers (knee) and David Zaharakis (ankle).

McKenna has become a vital cog of the Bombers’ backline, providing vital rebound with his blistering pace and setting up attacking forays.

In a short period of time, the 23-year-old has formed an effective one-two punch with fellow dashing defender Adam Saad who joined Essendon from Gold Coast ahead of the 2018 season.
