Melbourne have given Daisy Pearce a dream result in her comeback game with the Demons upsetting the AFLW premiership favourites North Melbourne in a tight match at Casey Fields.
It took some heroics from 20-year-old Eden Zanker who returned from what appeared to be a game-ending injury midway through the second quarter to put the Demons in front with a running goal early in the final quarter.
The goal made life difficult for North Melbourne as they kicked into a stiff breeze in the last quarter having failed to capitalise on the breeze in the third quarter. Their only serious scoring opportunity for the quarter was repelled when a cool kick from Melbourne midfielder Elise O’Dea found Karen Paxman in space and the danger passed.
Zanker’s efforts were critical, as she was also instrumental in creating an opportunity for the busy Kate Hore to score her second goal in the second quarter to keep the Demons in touch at half-time. That happened soon after she left the ground holding her arm only to create the scoring assist when Tegan Cunningham tackled her opponent deep in defence.
Zanker ended the match with just eight possessions but she will be remembered for her effort in giving the Demons a vital win against their cross-conference rivals.
