Police in Queensland the 16-year-old, who was a tourist on holiday with his family, was found in a critical condition by paramedics at around 2.30pm today at the Jezzine Barracks in North Ward.
Bystanders and emergency services tried to resuscitate the boy but he tragically died at the scene not long after.
“Early investigations suggest the boy was travelling down a hill and attempted to slow down prior to crashing into a pole,” Queensland Police said in a statement.
Townsville Police district duty officer Acting Senior Sergeant Jonathan Searle told the Courier Mail the boy — who was a Malaysian citizen on holiday with his family in Australia — was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and was skating with friends.
“A number of adults and the other children he was with came to his aid,” he said.
Police say they are investigating he circumstances of the crash.
