Hawthorn premiership player Jack Gunston will be sidelined until early February after he required surgery on a troublesome ankle.
The versatile Hawk had the operation on Monday after suffering discomfort in the pre-Christmas period with the club deciding it was better for him to have the operation now rather than hoping rest would lead to a recovery.
Gunston has played at least 19 games in every season since 2012 and is expected to resume training with the squad in February.
Hawks football manager Graham Wright said the club was optimistic the 28-year-old would recover quickly.
“Jack is now home recovering and looking forward to getting back into training in the new year, with a view to a return to training as soon as possible,” Wright said.
The Hawks returned from a pre-Christmas training camp at Mooloolaba on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast and are expected to resume training on January 13.
