Fans will need to wait at least another five days for Dale Steyn to make his Big Bash League debut with a side strain set to keep the South African legend out of a second Melbourne Stars game.
Having arrived in Australia on Wednesday night, the Stars opted to play it safe with the veteran paceman, leaving him out of the side that beat Brisbane Heat on the Gold Coast on Friday night.
The Stars had been hopeful Steyn would be ready to play against the Hobart Hurricanes in Moe on Sunday, however despite Steyn bowling pre-match on Friday night, team management decided he still wasn’t right, leaving the quick out of their 13-man squad for the match.
It means what was initially meant to be a six-match stint for Steyn in Australia has been cut to a maximum of four appearances. The Stars say they are optimistic Steyn will take on the Adelaide Strikers next Friday night on the Gold Coast.
The club is also hoping fellow off-season recruit Nathan Coulter-Nile (ankle) will be ready to play against the Strikers after he too was ruled out of a second match following an injury at training on Thursday. Coulter-Nile’s place in the Stars’ 13-man squad has been taken by Jono Merlo.
