Victorian jockey Ryan Maloney relocated to Brisbane just over a year ago, and the shift north has given him the chance to achieve a lifetime’s ambition with a horse he believes is the best he has ever ridden.
Maloney is convinced that Alligator Blood, a three-year-old gelding trained by David Vandyke, has all the tools to take him to the top and deliver the former Caulfield-based jockey his first career group 1, as well as big pay days in multimillion-dollar races in summer and autumn.
“I think he’s certainly the best I have ridden now. He should be unbeaten,” says the jockey, and it is a big call given Maloney was associated early on with flying sprinter Nature Strip.
Alligator Blood will be aimed at the Magic Millions raceday in his home state of Queensland next month before heading to Maloney’s old stomping ground in Melbourne for a tilt at the group 1 Australian Guineas at Flemington and then possibly an assault on the $5 million All-Star Mile, which will this year be run at Caulfield.
