“The rankings only matter to get you into tournaments. I’m not necessarily motivated to be the No.1 player in the world as much as I’m motivated to win a major championship,” Scott said on Wednesday after he played the pro-am with rugby league great Johnathan Thurston.
“It’s frustrating because there have been some weeks where I’ve had the chance (to win) and it hasn’t happened and it’s hard to find where I’ve put the foot wrong. Someone just played better and that’s annoying.
“A breakthrough win this week can carry me a long way into next year. Augusta (April’s Masters) is only a few months away now.”
Scott managed nine top 10 finishes on the PGA Tour in 2019 but his win tally remains at 13. Finishing the Australian swing in style has proven to be a good tonic for overseas raiders in the past and Scott wants to kickstart his 2020 with an overdue triumph.
He would usually take the week off after a major tournament such as the President’s Cup but has business to take care of on his home turf of the Gold Coast and feels as if his game, built on the silken swing that rates as one of golf’s finest, is in decent shape.
“I started playing really nicely last week in Melbourne, so whenever you get those good feelings, it’s always nice to have an event to play in. You know, I would like to kind of make the most of that this week,” Scott said.
“I am excited about is I like where my golf game is at leaving Melbourne. If I can bring some of that out here this week, then I think I’ll have a good chance of getting myself in for a chance to win, and that sounds fun to me because I would like to try and take some good momentum into next year.”
Part of him would look to see good friend Smith make history with a trio of Joe Kirkwood Cups. But a bigger part wants to reclaim his winning ways and set himself up as one of the game’s premier players once again.
“Cam’s had a good run here but that’s got to come to an end at some point and I’m sure it’s not just me ….there’s probably a 100-plus other guys who would like to do it this week. But I’m certainly feeling good after last week. And the fact that I haven’t won a trophy for too long, I definitely would like to change that right here.”
