Commuters crowd on platform as trains ‘held’ in both directions in Sydney

Commuters travelling on the Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra Line experienced delays this morning, after an operational issue caused trains travelling in both directions had to be held between Kings Cross and Bondi Junction, leading to huge crowds left waiting at Redfern station near the CBD.

A spokesman for Sydney Trains said delays were caused by “an operational issue” at Bondi Junction, which caused trains on the T4 line to be stopped for about 18 minutes.

He said crowding was likely caused by the stoppages.

“Trains travelling in both directions are currently delayed by up to 18 minutes,” Sydney Trains said on Twitter this morning. “Frequent services are still operating. Stopping patterns may change at short notice.”

Commuters were urged to check indicator boards on train platforms, and allow extra time, “as stopping patterns may change”.

The T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra Line travels from Bondi Junction in Sydney’s eastern suburbs to Waterfall or Cronulla in the Sutherland Shire, south of the city.

Services are now returning to normal, according to the spokesman from Sydney Trains.
