Tiger Woods leaves Patrick Reed out of opening session after defending maligned star

Controversial American star Patrick Reed will play in the opening session of the Presidents Cup after Tiger Woods elected to send himself out in the first group of Thursday’s session.

Reed, the former US Masters champion, will appear in Thursday’s fourball event after the United States benched Matt Kuchar and Rickie Fowler.

Reed has been forced to defend himself from deliberately breaching the rules of golf after he was penalised two shots for improving his lie in a waste bunker at Woods’ own tournament in the Bahamas last week.

The American was bracing for taunts from the Royal Melbourne when the red-hot favourites take on the International side and will combine with Webb Simpson to take on the International side’s Hideki Matsuyama and CT Pan.
