Dumped Test batsman Cameron Bancroft failed to fire and Shaun Marsh had his cage rattled by Peter Siddle, as Jake Carder steered Western Australia to a strong early position at lunch on day one of the Sheffield Shield match at the MCG.
Bancroft (10) was out cheaply in familiar fashion, caught in close on the leg side for the sixth time in his last seven dismissals.
His inside edge while defending a Siddle delivery marginally outside off stump, flew straight to a gleeful Matthew Short at leg gully, giving Victoria some vindication for choosing to bowl first after winning the toss.
However, inexperienced left-handed opener Carder (41 not out) shone resolutely in difficult batting conditions to guide WA to 1-77 at lunch.
Marsh (14 not out) was yet to score when a fierce Siddle delivery rose sharply and crashed into his grille.
