City defender Galloway revels in tactical tweaks

These have been the hallmarks of what the Melbourne branch of the City Football Group empire has been trying to do this season, and one of the players on whom responsibility falls heavily, full-back Scott Galloway, is delighted with the results so far.

“I have really enjoyed playing under Erick and the new style of football he wants to play,” Galloway says.

“It’s a formation I have never played before and I have only seen the likes of Manchester City playing it.

“But it’s been really good, really enjoyable. It adds different parts to your game, which as a full-back I am really enjoying.”

So how do City differ this season? Some call the key change the use of inverted full-backs. Galloway says that Mombaerts requires his players to be flexible, adaptable and focussed at all times.

“The style of play is where we look to an extra man into the midfield at times with the inverted full-back, whether it’s myself coming in from the right or to the middle, or Scott Jamieson [the left back],” he says.

“The other three will drop to form a back three and give us the chance to get another man into the midfield.

“If the wingers want to drop lower it gives them the opportunity to get on the ball too. We are constantly just wanting numbers around the ball and passing options.

“We like to keep the ball and have possession-based football, but good aggressive attacking football too.

“And if we turn the ball over it means we can get numbers around the ball really quickly as well.”

Practice will make perfect, Galloway says.

“We work on it a lot, every single day we are constantly working on us and how we will improve,” he says.

“I think we have done well to adapt to it pretty quickly. Every player knows their job, roles and responsibilities.

“Everyone knows that if one person is out their replacement can do the same job. They know what they have to do and where they have to be.”

Galloway had a good season with Adelaide last year, but looks to have improved still further in Melbourne and got on the scoresheet with an excellent goal in City’s win over Wellington.

“It has to be up there with one of the best I have ever scored, coming in and digging it with my left from a decent distance out. I want to bring that into my game more,” he says.
