Lachie Henderson lifeline? Geelong Cats mull it over ahead of AFL rookie draft

Geelong are weighing up whether to retain veteran defender Lachie Henderson on the rookie list in 2020 after a spot on the list opened up when ruckman Ryan Abbott joined St Kilda last week.

The 171-game swingman was delisted at the end of the season after 13 senior games in two seasons but his experience could be considered helpful for the growing number of young players on the Cats’ list.

Henderson, who turns 30 next month, played in the final four rounds of the home-and-away season and then in the preliminary final after key forward Tom Hawkins was suspended, and is a popular clubman.

Although the Cats have seven players aged 29 on their list they also have half a list that is 22 or under heading into next season and drafted key defender Sam De Koning with pick 19 on Wednesday night, thwarting the plans of several clubs who had their eyes on him.
