Kyah Simon says she must be patient to win back Matildas spot

“My desire to be back playing football trumps anything but I need to be a little bit smarter with that and be patient and I guess a little bit conservative with not trying to just smash myself and go out there to get 90 [minutes] in the next couple of weeks. It is a longer process but I think [if I take] it slow and do it right in these early stages, I will benefit for it in the long run.

“I’ve had some good conversations with coaching staff within the Matildas and they’ve been very supportive of me. But I think everyone’s on the same page of just wanting me to get healthy,” Simon said.

Matildas star Caitlin Foord said the team “all felt for her” when Simon missed out on the World Cup.

“Unfortunately there is never a good time for an injury but it has been the worst timing possible for Kyah. We play to play in big games and tournaments like the World Cup.”

Foord is playing for Sydney FC this W-League season and said the national squad is confident ahead of the Asian qualifiers in February next year.

There are only two spots for Asian teams up for grabs as Japan automatically qualifies as the host nation.

“We know how hard it is to play against Asian teams but I think over the last couple of years we have got a bit of an edge over our Asian competitors,” she said.

“I think they fear us now. So I am confident if we are at our best as individuals and as a team we will beat anyone.”

For Simon, her focus for the rest of the W-League season comes with the goal of playing the entire 90 minutes, and not pressuring herself to “over-prove anything”.

“[I’ve got] some smaller goals in mind, with my health and well-being being number one for me, [as well as] contributing to the team in a greater capacity this year with Melbourne City and hopefully that’s enough once i’m fit and healthy to be at the qualifiers with the Matildas.”

Simon will line up for Melbourne City against Adelaide United on Saturday.
