Former Cat Ryan Abbott becomes a Saint

St Kilda have plucked another mature aged player ahead of next week’s national draft signing former Geelong ruckman Ryan Abbott as a delisted free agent.

He is the sixth player to join the Saints from another club since season’s end. List manager James Gallagher said Abbott would add necessary depth to their rucks with Rowan Marshall and Patrick Ryder having only the inexperienced Sam Alabakis as back-up.

The 28-year-old was recruited to Geelong with pick 69 in the 2016 national draft after making a late start to football following a promising basketball career. He won two best and fairests while playing in the Geelong Football League with Grovedale.

He made his debut for the Cats late in 2018 and played in their elimination final loss to Melbourne but he added only one senior game to his tally in 2019, performing well against the Western Bulldogs in round nine.

Abbott still had a year remaining on his contract but the Cats were happy for him to explore the market during the trade and free agency period while committing to re-drafting him as a rookie if he could not find another home.
