Hannebery ‘flattened’ but moving on from latest injury setback

“I’ve got to make sure he gets that fixed because my sister did the same thing, she didn’t break her ankle but did a bad roll.

“I tried to walk on it and I knew I was in a fair bit of trouble and rang the doctors.”

“I was really flattened, especially given my past few years of injury troubles.

“Once you accept the reality of it all and you get told … [that] it shouldn’t impact you too much, it takes the anxiety a bit and you can just focus on your recovery.

“I’m just rapt I’m out of my moon boot, which was pretty frustrating there for a couple of weeks.”

Hannebery only played five games in his first season for the Saints due to knee and hamstring problems. He said he was scheduled to be on a managed pre-season heading into 2020 regardless.

“But it shouldn’t put too much of a dent on my pre-season considering I wasn’t going to do a hell of a lot pre-Christmas anyway,” the 28-year-old said.

“I was going to get managed and looked after a little bit anyway, so I’m looking forward to pressing hard during the Christmas break and in early January.”

The Saints were among the busiest clubs in the recent trade period, recruiting Dan Butler, Paddy Ryder, Dougal Howard, Brad Hill and Zak Jones to the club. Hill arrived with a knee injury so is on a managed pre-season program at this stage.

“It will be really exciting to play alongside Brad and Dougal and Paddy Ryder and Dan Butler,” Hannebery said.

“Also excited again to play with Zak Jones, who I played a lot of footy up in Sydney with.

“All those guys add different elements to our game and if they’re all fit and well, along with Dylan Roberton and [Jarryn] Geary and [Jimmy] Webster and myself, it should hopefully be a pretty different looking team.

“But nothing’s won in November so we really have to work super, super hard this pre-season.”

Over half of the Saints list did a 3-kilometre time trial on Monday, with Ed Phillips winning ahead of Doulton Langlands and Josh Battle.
