Complex payroll holding back Wesfarmers payments to underpaid staff

Underpaid Wesfarmers staff may not get the Christmas stocking filler cash bonus they were hoping for with the company admitting the complexity of its payroll systems meant the money owed may not make it into bank accounts by year’s end.

At the beginning of October Wesfarmers announced an internal review uncovered about $15 million in underpayments of nearly 6000 current and former industrial division employees, which included businesses such as Blackwoods and Workwear Group, going back as far as 2010.

After the Wesfarmers AGM on Thursday Managing Director Rob Scott said no payments had yet been made and conceded some affected staff would not receive their’s until 2020 but they would ‘accelerate’ the process and attempt get payments happening before Christmas.

“It’s an incredibly complex process working through many different systems, working through many different award arrangements and we want to make sure we get this right and ideally get money back to our existing employees before Christmas,” he said.
