Bright Rubick has a spring in McLellan’s step

Darryl McLellan has good memories of the last time Newcastle had a standalone Saturday meeting in 2000, and hopes to add to them with Bright Rubick in the Spring Stakes this weekend.

McLellan had six years away from the sport and has been back riding for about a year, punctuated by a long layoff due to a broken ankle, and had his biggest payday since returning when a runner-up in the VRC Oaks on Never Listen for John Ramsey at Flemington last week.

He teams with another of the Scone’s trainer handy types, Bright Rubick, in the Spring Stakes for his only ride of the day.

“I was hoping for more rides but to ride in one of the features is good,” McLellan said. “The last time they had a [standalone] Saturday meeting was during the Sydney Olympics. I won the Newcastle Cup on Silent Impact, so it would be be good to do it again.”
