Four wins and a draw, clear top of the A-League and purring nicely: things could hardly have started better for Melbourne City’s French coach Erick Mombaerts.
City are far from the finished article, as the experienced Mombaerts concedes, but he is heartened by the way his squad has been able to adjust to a series of injuries which have cost him key players.
Top goal-scorer Jamie Maclaren – four goals in two A-League starts this season – is out with a hamstring injury and will not be back for a couple of weeks yet, while French attacking midfielder Florin Berenguer has not played this season at all although he may be close to returning next week.
“If Jamie is not here we need to find another option. It’s not about individual, it’s about finding solutions with our squad,” Mombaerts said.
