Australian group buy into Irish star Il Paradiso

Melbourne businessman Ozzie Kheir, owner of last year’s Melbourne Cup runner-up Marmelo, is hoping to go one better next year after buying the Irish galloper who many believe should have won this year’s race.

Kheir and his ownership group, including well-known racing figure John O’Neill and Phil Mehrten and Victor Kheir, have bought Il Paradiso, the Aidan O’Brien-trained three-year-old who might have beaten Vow And Declare but for interference close to the winning post.

A stewards protest eventually saw Il Paradiso, fourth past the post, elevated to third because of the interference caused by the Frankie Dettori-ridden Master Of Reality, who was originally second over the line.

The colt was previously owned by Coolmore and will now be trained in Sydney by Chris Waller, although the Irish company is retaining a share in the horse.
