Longmire coy on another bid for Daniher

He went onto say about Daniher’s failed move: “[I had conversations with Daniher] late in the process. I didn’t need to sit down and get to know Joe, I got to know Joe before he made the decision to go to Essendon, when he had a chance to come to Sydney [as a father-son]. That was a number of years ago.

“Joe made the call that he was interested in coming to us [this year], but I didn’t have to sit down and get to know him, I knew him from a long time ago.

“It happened late towards the [end of the] season. We put what we thought was a good offer forward and that didn’t get it done. Essendon obviously wanted some younger players that we had and we weren’t prepared to do that. In the end we went to the last few minutes … trying to work out how to get it done.”

Daniher is contracted to the Bombers until the end of 2020. Injuries have restricted him to just 11 games across the past two seasons.

The Swans weren’t prepared to let small forward/midfielder Papley go without getting Daniher to the club.

“We made it clear to Tom and his management that we didn’t want to trade him and he’s a valuable player for us and so that’s the starting point,” Longmire said.

“As the process unfolded, we were working in good faith to see if something could happen and when it didn’t happen it’s a matter of touching base again and talking about it is pretty simple process, you just sit down and have a chat about it and get back into training and he’s got his shoulder he needs to rehab and get back in and get going.

“That’s just the way it goes, particularly with footy.

“We were open minded on both sides, whether it was Joe or Tom … in the end you need to get on with the job at hand.”

Meanwhile, Buddy Franklin has been spotted on the tract for the Swans early, in a boost for the side. Injury has restricted his ability to train at full capacity for the past few years.

“He’s pretty invested and he is looking forward to being able to train with the team before Christmas for the first time he has been at the club.”
