Geelong have confirmed they are among several clubs investigating the prospect of resurrecting the career of talented midfielder Harley Bennell, as the 27-year-old prepares to make tentative steps towards overcoming his calf problems.
The Cats confirmed they met with Bennell recently as they assess whether he has the desire to make it at AFL level. Off-field issues at Gold Coast were compounded by constant injury frustrations at Fremantle which restricted him to just two games in three seasons at the club.
He met with several Victorian clubs as well as Sydney after renewed hope that he could overcome his calf issues followed surgery in July, with some clubs exploring the possibility of inviting Bennell to train with them during the pre-season.
Clubs could add Bennell to the rookie list via the rookie draft or look to add him via the pre-season supplementary list after he trains with them, with running the next step he needs to take to build confidence in his calf.
