Vow And Declare will attempt back-to-back Cup wins

Melbourne Cup winner Vow And Declare will be set for next year’s Cup after his thrilling victory in Tuesday’s race when he overcame the foreign invaders to chalk up a victory for Australian connections.

The lightly-raced four-year-old had just his 13th start in the Cup, having already finished second in the Caulfield Cup and the Queensland Derby, and fought back on the line to beat European trio Master Of Reality, Prince Of Arran and Il Paradiso on the line.

Trainer Danny O’Brien said Vow And Declare would need to improve on his run to prevail again given he will attract more weight from the handicapper than the 52 kilograms he carried to victory on Tuesday, but he thought he could.

“He will definitely be in Australia for the next 12 months,” O’Brien said.
