Essendon have recalled forgotten defender Martin Gleeson to play his first game in 656 days for the vital clash against Greater Western Sydney at Marvel Stadium on Thursday night.
Gleeson replaces injured defender Matt Guelfi who has not recovered from the injury he sustained when he crashed into a chair after West Coast’s Jeremy McGovern pushed him over the boundary line during last week’s match at Optus Stadium.
Gleeson has been in solid form in the VFL as he returned from a serious foot injury suffered during last year’s pre-season that lingered long enough to rule him out for 2018.
He then suffered a fractured cheekbone before showing his class in the VFL in recent weeks.
The Giants dropped Matt Buntine and first gamer Jake Stein while losing tagger Matt De Boer to a shoulder injury however they were able to recall classy defender Nick Haynes as well as Zac Langdon and Jackson Hately.
The Bombers need to win to remain a serious finals contender with veteran David Zaharakis set to celebrate his 200th game.
