AFL Tribunal: Luke McDonald suspension upheld

North Melbourne defender Luke McDonald will miss his side’s Good Friday clash with Essendon at Marvel Stadium after the AFL tribunal upheld a one-match ban for rough conduct.

Tribunal members Wayne Henwood, Jason Johnson and Richard Loveridge took just over 20 minutes to deliberate, ultimately agreeing with match review officer Michael Christian’s assessment of McDonald’s late spoil on Adelaide’s Chayce Jones as careless, medium impact and high contact.

“I just hope that Chayce is all right and he can get up this weekend, but I’m disappointed, massive game for the club and I won’t be out there,” McDonald said after the hearing.

AFL counsel Jeff Gleeson QC argued that while McDonald had initially been a chance to legitimately make the contest, he should have realised at a point that he “could and should have stopped” given there reached a point where there was no reasonable chance of him making a spoil.
