Siem de Jong is in doubt for Saturday night’s derby as the Sydney FC marquee star struggles to shake off a knock he took in their thrilling AFC Champions League draw with Shanghai SIPG.
De Jong took a kick to his calf on Wednesday that required medical attention and eventually caused him to be subbed off in the second half. Coach Steve Corica said it was still feeling sore on Friday and that a decision was yet to be taken on his involvement in the clash with Western Sydney at ANZ Stadium.
The Sky Blues have made it through a fair chunk of the season already without the Dutchman, whose rotten luck with injuries has followed him in his loan stint from Ajax. However, there is little doubt the 30-year-old is a matchwinner at his best and with the business end of the season now here, Corica needs to have all of his best players fit and firing.
Michael Zullo (hamstring) definitely won’t face the Wanderers, with utility Paulo Retre set to fill in for him at left-back. Those two aside, Sydney FC are at full strength and ready to maintain their crosstown supremacy.
