The Australian track and field championships have been rocked by revelations the coach of a rising Sydney track star has been suspended over an ongoing ASADA investigation.
Greg Smith, the coach of Commonwealth Games 400 metre runner Bendere Oboya, dubbed the ‘next Cathy Freeman’, is understood to have had his coaching accreditation suspended by Athletics Australia in June last year.
The Herald understands the suspension came about as a result of an investigation into Smith by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority, although neither organisation would respond to requests for comment on the matter. Smith was also contacted for comment.
Smith, who runs a western Sydney training business called Speedcity Training, is not permitted to travel or appear as Oboya’s coach in an official capacity, but is believed to have been in attendance at the Australian championships at Sydney Olympic Park this week.
