Bowler Pat Cummins to be rested for World Cup

Pat Cummins is set to miss the two dead-rubber ODIs against Pakistan in Dubai as Australia give their most prized asset another extended break.

Cummins, who shapes as Australia’s most important player during both their World Cup and Ashes defence in England this year, is expected to return home soon.

The 25-year-old isn’t taking part in the Indian Premier League and will be able to enjoy some down time before linking up with the World Cup squad in Brisbane for a training camp in early May.

Fellow quicks Mitchell Starc (torn pec), Josh Hazlewood (back) and Jhye Richardson (dislocated shoulder) are already racing the clock to be fit for the World Cup, meaning a setback for Cummins, who is set be the highest-paid player on Cricket Australia’s contract list released in coming weeks, would be a nightmare for selectors and coach Justin Langer.
