Godolphin import Avilius has promised a group 1 victory since the spring, when he was set on a Melbourne Cup path, but it took getting back to Sydney for him to achieve the dream in the Ranvet Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday.
The Pivotal five-year-old remains unbeaten in the Harbour City after defying the pattern of the day and charging home in the second half of the field to run down He’s Eminent in a return to form.
“He may be better on this leg,” admitted Kerrin McEvoy as Avilius put behind his defeat in the Australian Cup as an odds-on favourite. “I think he enjoyed getting back to Sydney and getting onto some softer ground.
“I had a nice run through, following Auvray, he picked up really well when I asked him. He powered through the ground. Soon after I asked him, I thought I’ve got this won. It’s pretty evident that he is pretty electric and that ground assisted him.”
