Coaches in feisty meeting with AFL over runner restrictions

The AFL’s commitment to restrain the use of the runner and a wish to shorten the pre-season activity to reduce injury were among the key topics in a feisty meeting between the coaches and the AFL hierarchy.

Debate, or argument, over the new rules on the runner absorbed much of the time in the annual breakfast meeting between the coaches, AFL CEO Gil McLachlan and football manager Steve Hocking.

Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson is understood to have set the tone of the meeting with a feisty opening gambit with the AFL.

Clarkson is among a group of coaches, including some of his former assistants such as Luke Beveridge and Chris Fagan, who are the most stridently opposed to the new restrictions on the runners.
