A drug-addicted father who abandoned his toddler in a park south of Brisbane and then lied about what happened to him for a decade has been sentenced to 12 years jail for his son’s manslaughter.
Baden Bond’s father Shane Arthur Simpson admitted he caused the 22-month-old’s death after leaving him at the park at dusk in May 2007.
In his sentencing, Justice Peter Applegarth told the court the crime against the baby was “a gross negligence of an extreme kind”.
“You practically invited a tragic end to his life … As time had passed, you must have known that he had perished,” he said.
His body has never been found and what happened to him after he was abandoned on the banks of the Logan River is unknown.
The boy was born to Dina Colleen Bond with methamphetamine in his system, and was blamed by his parents for being the reason their other children were taken into state care because of his condition at birth.
Bond pleaded guilty to two counts of being an accessory to the manslaughter for keeping up the lies about Baden.
She is due to be sentenced today.
More to come.
