Corrigan takes a shot at Burnside

High-profile barrister Julian Burnside’s nomination as the Greens’ star recruit to contest the blue-ribbon Liberal seat of Kooyong has been greeted with scorn by his old adversary, former Patrick boss Chris Corrigan.

“I suspect his time arguing fruitless legal cases will prepare him to embrace and advocate the ludicrously insane economic platform of the Greens,” Mr Corrigan said, describing the QC who acted for the Maritime Union of Australia in the infamous 1998 waterfront dispute against Patrick as “a self-promoting dandy”.

Mr Burnside represented the MUA successfully through a bruising dispute all the way to the High Court over Mr Corrigan’s attempt to sack his unionised workforce after a corporate restructure and replace them with workers from Dubai.

The waterfront dispute would prove a watershed case for Mr Burnside who has said: “It was the first time in my life that I had reason to stand back and wonder whether I could trust governments.”
