AFL Total Player Payments: League’s six million-dollar men

The number of million dollar players reduced from nine to six last year despite an increase in player wages across the competition to $240 million.

Although the players who earned above the million dollar mark are not named by the AFL, The Age believes Sydney champion Lance Franklin, then Gold Coast skipper Tom Lynch, Richmond superstar Dustin Martin, Fremantle Brownlow medallist Nat Fyfe, Bulldog premiership player Tom Boyd and Greater Western Sydney’s Jeremy Cameron are the super six to earn above the figure in 2018.

Joel Selwood and Scott Pendlebury are understood to have been the only players in the competition paid a fixed percentage of the total player payments when they signed their most recent contracts.

While Selwood’s deal was understood to take him close to seven figures, he and teammate Patrick Dangerfield, as well as Collingwood captain Pendlebury, are still believed to have earned less than a million dollars last year.
