Brendon Goddard wins Madden Medal

Things might have been different. Essendon might’ve offered Brendon Goddard a contract for this season, and he wouldn’t have been eligible for this award.

Of course that didn’t eventuate, and Goddard called time on his decorated career. On Tuesday night at the AFL Players’ Association season launch, he was honoured as the recipient of the 2018 Madden Medal.

The award is given annually to the retiring player “who has best demonstrated on-field excellence, personal development and growth, as well as community spirit over the course of his playing career.”

Goddard, 33, retired at the end of 2018 after 334 games across 16 seasons with St Kilda and the Bombers called it a day late last year after the Dons decided not to offer him a new deal.
